A better understanding
A few reminders for a better understanding of the frequently used terms:
RHEUMATISM : a general name which groups together very varied acute or chronic disorders which affect the joints and which have pain and swelling in common.
It is the foundation of the word Rheumatologist which defines the specialists of these diseases even if their field of intervention is broader (pathology of the spine, osteoporosis, etc)
ARTHRITIS : groups together all the inflammatory diseases, “inflammatory” being the significant word, whether they are acute or chronic (if they persist more than 3 months). The induced lesions affect the entire anatomy of the joint (the articular capsule, synovial membrane, cartilage, bone, etc)
OSTEOARTHRITIS : defines this chronic disorder (> 3 months) that is solely cartilage-degenerative. It is non inflammatory, with a major genetic component and leads to the destruction of the cartilage and dysfunction of the joint.
In this section we are going to attempt to help you understand what osteoarthritis is.
